Budget Update - February 10, 2010
On Tuesday, February 9, 2010, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education approved the recommended budget reductions listed below. Newport-Mesa continues to focus on supporting the integrity of the instructional programs to ensure student learning. This is the third year the District has had to make budget reductions due to the current fiscal climate, and it is likely that the trend will continue for several more years to come.
In 2007/08, the District cut $3.1 miilion; in 2008/09 $8.2 million; and, now, in 2009/10, the District has to make additional reductions in the amount of $13.5 million. In the previous years, the District was able to avoid official layoffs of personnel by restructuring programs and not filling positions vacated by retirements, leaves, etc.
For 2009/10 however, with a budget that is comprised of 88% dedicated to personnel costs, the District cannot avoid making cuts in the areas of personnel in order to balance the budget. The reductions below represent cuts across the District, with 60% of the cuts coming from the district office, administration and support operations and 40% from the school sites.
We encourage you to review the powerpoint presented at the February 9, 2010 Board meeting that outlines the building blocks and issues that N-MUSD as well as every district in California is facing due to the current unstable fiscal climate at the State level. District's did not create this problem, but they must deal with the consequences.
Despite the current fiscal situation, N-MUSD students and staff continue to excel and learning is the focus as evidenced by the continuing rising test scores and award winning schools. Newport-Mesa's strength and resiliency comes from the dedicated and exceptional staff, students and families who continue to support the schools and community. We are committed to working together and maintaining our relationships with all stakeholders to endure and overcome these difficult fiscal times. Because at the end of the day... it's about the kids and they are counting on us.
