The Newport-Mesa Unified School District provides our students a curriculum aligned to the California State Content Standards which is taught by highly qualified well trained teachers. Teachers use benchmark assessment data to drive their instruction and report student progress to parents three times yearly using standards based report card.

Program Description
Newport-Mesa believes students should receive a world-class science education. The elementary science program is a district-wide initiative to provide content rich, inquiry based science experiences to students grades K-6. The programs many components include:
- Classroom science textbooks
- Elementary science labs
- Elementary Science Specialists
- Hands-on science kits
- On-line resources
Through readings and hands-on experiences, Newport-Mesa students develop an understanding of science content that helps prepare them for the 21st century.

Pearson Sciencematerials offer students the rich content of science through readings, pictures, and in class investigations. Textbooks and on-line resources bring students to a deeper understanding of the natural world and the science they experience in their daily lives.

Full Option Science Systems (FOSS)materials offer students the opportunity to discover science through hands-on activities. As a supplement to Pearson Science and central to instruction in the science labs, FOSS materials develop student’s ability to think like scientists.
Elementary Science Specialists
Newport-Mesa employs Elementary Science Specialists to offer lab based science experiences to students in grades 4-6. The Science Specialists use Full Option Science Systems (FOSS) and other hands-on activities to teach students the process skills of science.
