Newport-Mesa Unified School District Announces Selection of New Principal for Whittier Elementary School

For Immediate Release: Friday, May 24, 2013 Newport-Mesa Unified School District is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Scott Wilcox as Principal of Whittier Elementary School. Mr. Wilcox will be recommended for official appointment at the next regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Mr. Wilcox’s selection is the result of an extensive recruitment process. The process included a community forum held at the school to gather input from parents and staff about the attributes they would like to see in their next principal. The District held interviews conducted by panels comprised of district, employee, and parent representatives from Whittier Elementary School. The District concluded final interviews last week. Based on all of the input received, we believe Mr. Wilcox is a solid match. Mr. Wilcox brings with him 26 years of experience as an educator. He currently serves as the Principal of Felton Elementary School in the Lennox School District. His educational experiences as a teacher, principal, and director of personnel services have afforded him opportunities to learn how to make schools better for each and every student. His bilingual abilities combined with his respect for diversity and cultural awareness has helped him to build strong ties with communities and families. Lennox Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Luis Camarena shared, “Mr. Wilcox is the well-respected principal of Felton Elementary School. He has built a culture of high expectations, respect and caring. The school has become one large family, which looks out for the specific needs of each student.” Plans for Mr. Wilcox’s transition to Whittier Elementary School will be shared with the school community following his official appointment.

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Priorities - 2012/13

A cademics - Instructional Excellence By June 2014, all high schools will implement the “a-g” course of study for all students. Successful completion of the “a-g” course of study will become the curriculum for high school students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to provide a guaranteed and viable curriculum. Definition of “a-g”: A list of high school courses that fulfills the subject requirements for admission to the University of California and California State University. The number of National Merit Scholars from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will meet or exceed the national average in three years at each campus. What is the National Merit Scholarship Program? In each annual National Merit Scholarship Program, about 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored, but only some 16,000 of them are named Semifinalists. Students who qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT ® ) are the only program participants who have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 8,300 of the outstanding Finalists will be chosen as Merit Scholarship ® winners. In 2012, N-MUSD had 8 NMSF’s. By fall 2013, all administrative staff will be trained in the development, implementation, and supervision of lesson design to ensure access for all students to a guaranteed and viable curriculum. B ehavior By fall 2013, Newport-Mesa USD schools will implement Restorative Justice or similar system at all schools. What is meant by Restorative Justice? A focus on student behavior policies and practices that rely on: character education, positive behavior intervention and support, improved student behavior, nurturing environment, and appropriate discipline. C reativity - Innovation By June 2013, schools will explore opportunities and assess capacity to offer innovative programs at their site. How is the District Pursuing This Priority? The District is currently exploring ideas and options for creating flagship programs for each zone. Newport-Mesa consists of 4 school zones: Estancia, Costa Mesa, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar. The goal is to establish 1 Academic and 1 Arts FlagshipProgram in eachzone. We are beginning the process with the Estancia Zone and will then move to the remaining zones.
