N-MUSD Superintendent's Recommendations for Principal Changes at NHHS, Rea, TeWinkle and Newport El

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 7, 2013 Newport-Mesa Unified School District Announces Recommendations for Principal Changes at Newport Elementary and Tewinkle Middle School; Principal Openings at Rea Elementary and Newport Harbor High School; and, Appointment of Director of Pathways and Business Relations Supe rintendent Fred Navarro is pleased to announce the following staff recommendations to be sent to the Board of Education for official approval on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Newport Harbor High School – Principal Opening Mr. Michael Vossen has served as the principal of Newport Harbor High School since 2000. During his tenure at NHHS, he has been a strong advocate for the enhancement and expansion of career technical programs both on the campus and district wide. The NHHS Culinary Arts Program is a nationally recognized award winning model. Michael’s knowledge and strengths in the area of career pathways combined with his leadership and business experience make him a match for the role of Director of Career Pathways and Business Relations in N-MUSD. Pending Board approval, the position will begin July 1, 2013. N-MUSD will immediately begin the open search process for a new principal that will include staff, student, parent and community input. The goal is to have a new principal in place before the start of the new school year. Rea Elementary School – Principal Opening Dr. Anna Corral has served as the principal of Rea Elementary School since 2008 and has done an exemplary job. Anna’s strong leadership skills and community outreach efforts have created a school environment rich in parent support and programs for all students. Prior to Rea, Anna brought with her 13 years of experience serving as a middle/high school administrator. Anna’s K-12 strengths make her a natural fit to transition to the role of principal of TeWinkle Middle School. Pending Board approval, Anna will begin her new role as principal of TeWinkle Middle School July 1, 2013. N-MUSD will immediately begin the open search process for a new principal that will include staff, student, parent and community input. The goal is to have a new principal in place before the start of the new school year. TeWinkle Middle School – Change in Principal Rich Rodriguez has served as the principal of TeWinkle Middle School since 2010. During his tenure, he has created innovative intervention programs for students and raised achievement levels including bringing TeWinkle’s API to over 800. Prior to Rea, Rich served as principal of Newport Coast Elementary School. His legacy for leading his instructional team into developing a strong professional learning community is still present at Newport Coast Elementary today. Rich’s strengths in instructional leadership and student achievement make him a good fit to transition to the role of principal of Newport Elementary School. Pending Board approval, Rich will begin his new role as principal of Newport Elementary School July 1, 2013. Dr. Anna Corral will transition to TeWinkle Middle School as the new principal at the same time. Newport Elementary School – Change in Principal Dr. Amy Nagy has served as the principal of Newport Elementary School since 2004. Dr. Nagy has led her team of instructional leaders to develop Newport Elementary School’s “Climate of Success,” by blending strong academics with a focus on character. The “Best on the Beach” school will be in good hands as Dr. Nagy leaves her role as principal of Newport El. Built on a solid foundation of success for all students, we expect a smooth transition as Rich Rodriguez assumes the role of Newport Elementary School’s new principal July 1, 2013. As happens each year when we approach the conclusion of a school year, some staffing decisions remain in flux until such time as all transitions have occurred. Dr. Nagy’s official role for the 2013/14 is still to be determined based on needs yet to be reconciled. ###

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Priorities - 2012/13

A cademics - Instructional Excellence By June 2014, all high schools will implement the “a-g” course of study for all students. Successful completion of the “a-g” course of study will become the curriculum for high school students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to provide a guaranteed and viable curriculum. Definition of “a-g”: A list of high school courses that fulfills the subject requirements for admission to the University of California and California State University. The number of National Merit Scholars from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will meet or exceed the national average in three years at each campus. What is the National Merit Scholarship Program? In each annual National Merit Scholarship Program, about 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored, but only some 16,000 of them are named Semifinalists. Students who qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT ® ) are the only program participants who have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 8,300 of the outstanding Finalists will be chosen as Merit Scholarship ® winners. In 2012, N-MUSD had 8 NMSF’s. By fall 2013, all administrative staff will be trained in the development, implementation, and supervision of lesson design to ensure access for all students to a guaranteed and viable curriculum. B ehavior By fall 2013, Newport-Mesa USD schools will implement Restorative Justice or similar system at all schools. What is meant by Restorative Justice? A focus on student behavior policies and practices that rely on: character education, positive behavior intervention and support, improved student behavior, nurturing environment, and appropriate discipline. C reativity - Innovation By June 2013, schools will explore opportunities and assess capacity to offer innovative programs at their site. How is the District Pursuing This Priority? The District is currently exploring ideas and options for creating flagship programs for each zone. Newport-Mesa consists of 4 school zones: Estancia, Costa Mesa, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar. The goal is to establish 1 Academic and 1 Arts FlagshipProgram in eachzone. We are beginning the process with the Estancia Zone and will then move to the remaining zones.
