Human Relations Task Force

Mission Statement

In 2019, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) established a Human Relations Task Force (HRTF). The HRTF makes recommendations regarding diversity, equity and inclusion to further the district’s ongoing commitment to create safe, respectful and inclusive schools.  The mission of the HRTF is to create an environment where students can become empathetic, kind, compassionate and respectful citizens.

In alignment with the mission of the HRTF, an implementation plan was developed, which includes action items addressing bias-related incidents, anti-bias education, recommendations for staff, professional development; and parent and student education.

NMUSD immediately began to implement the plan in fall 2019; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic many of the actions that did not have a remote option were postponed.  The district remains committed to continuing with the action items on the implementation plan which are expected to resume in fall 2021.  Moving forward, the work of the HRTF will focus on the evaluation of programs included in the implementation plan.
