H1N1/Swine Flu Information

swineflupic

The Newport Mesa Unified School District has created this website to provide schools and parents with the most current information about the H1N1 flu outbreak. H1N1 flu is a respiratory illness of pigs caused by infection with H1N1 influenza A virus (SIV) that can occasionally affect humans.

On this website you will find links to informational sites about H1N1 flu as well as toolkits and other resources that schools and parents may use to increase awareness about H1N1 flu prevention and treatment.

Newport-Mesa Unified School District follows the guidelines and recommendations provided by the Health Care Agency of Orange County and the Orange County Department of Education.

September 25, 2009 Advisory From County of Orange Health Care Agency:

In order to help us effectively monitor this outbreak, schools need to do the following.
  • Monitor absenteeism and determine the reasons for absences
  • Report any unusual absenteeism or increase in febrile respiratory illness (at least 10% above baseline absenteeism) to Orange County Public Health.
  • Report any clusters of illness (at least 20% of a class or other defined group of students and/or staff, with a minimum of 5 persons ill) to Orange County Public Health
Occurrence of a case or cases of pH1N1 illness at a school does not change the current recommendations for schools (see also the California Department of Public Health recommendations at: CDPH K-12 school guidance):
  • Students and staff should stay home when sick
  • Sick students and staff should be separated promptly from others
  • Enforce hand hygiene (including use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer) and respiratory etiquette
  • Perform routine cleaning, especially for high-touch surfaces
  • Encourage ill staff and parents of high-risk students to seek early treatment
Student dismissal from school (assuming no change in severity of illness due to pH1N1)
Dismissing students from a school may be advisable if so many of the staff are out ill that the school cannot operate safely or if a cluster of influenza-like illness is occurring at a school where many or all of the students are at high risk for severe complications due to influenza. Such decisions should be made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the potentially negative consequences of dismissing students.

For Parents and Students

What can your student do to avoid getting sick?

Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick with influenza, NMUSD recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
What do I do if my student gets sick?
Contact your child’s personal physician or regular health care provider.  If you don’t have a provider the nearest community health clinic or emergency hospital facility will be able to assist you.  Also contact the school as soon as possible of your child becoming ill.

Should I send my student to school if they are sick?
No.  The student should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading the illness to others.

When can my student return to school?
Those with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of  a fever without the use of fever reducing medicines (such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol).

Tips For Staff

Influenza can spread rapidly in school environments where students and staff are in close proximity. In order for students and staff to remain healthy and be safe, teachers and other staff members may want to remember these helpful suggestions that include some basic hygiene precautions that can be used in every school.

Workplace Strategies:

Stay home if you experience a fever of 100° or higher until the fever has been gone for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or with a hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol) if soap and water are not available.

Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes.

Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or cough and sneeze into your upper sleeve. Dispose of tissues in no-touch trash receptacles.

Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.

If wearing gloves, always wash your hands after removing them.

Keep frequently touched common surfaces (for example, telephones, computer equipment, etc.) clean.

Try not to use other workers' phones, desks, offices, or other work tools and equipment.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle; attention to rest, diet, exercise, and relaxation helps maintain physical and emotional health.
