School Safety
Safety is always top of mind in Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) and while we have plans and processes in place to mitigate and manage emergency situations, please know that school safety is not something we can do alone. The partnership and support that we have with our local law enforcement and our school community is critical.
STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOL

NMUSD is implementing the The "I Love U Guys" Standard Response Protocol (SRP) districtwide as part of an effort to streamline terminology used in emergency situations. The SRP clearly defines the five actions to take in an emergency: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.

CENTEGIX CrisisAlert Emergency Alerting System
All NMUSD schools are equipped with CENTEGIX CrisisAlert, a wearable safety badge that allows employees to instantly request assistance during an emergency with the press of a button. CENTEGIX works alongside the district's Standard Response Protocol (SRP), giving staff a fast, reliable way to summon help while following standardized emergency procedures. The system also integrates with local law enforcement dispatch to help support a faster, more coordinated response during an emergency. Learn more about how CENTEGIX works below, or view our informational flyer for parents and families.

More information on submitting a tip is available on our WeTip webpage.
HOW WE PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES
EMERGENCY TIPS
EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
In the case of an emergency at our schools, we ask that you please remember to look for official information from the school or district. We deliver messages via school and district websites, email, phone, text, and district social media accounts - Instagram, Facebook, X. Please ensure that your child’s school has your most current contact information on file – Update Contact Information
VISITOR POLICY
All visitors to schools must report to the front office, state reason for their visit and receive a visitor badge prior to entering classrooms or school grounds.
HEAT & AIR QUALITY MONITORING
NMUSD uses real-time, on-campus monitoring to help keep students safe during outdoor activities.
Perry Weather monitoring equipment at our four comprehensive high schools (Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Estancia, and Newport Harbor) tracks live heat and air quality conditions for their surrounding areas. PurpleAir sensors provide additional air quality monitoring at some of our other sites. Together, these give site administrators real, current conditions rather than a general forecast, so decisions about outdoor activity are based on what's actually happening on campus.
HEAT RISK LEVELS
|
Level |
Zone | WBGT Threshold | Required Actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Normal | Below 80.0°F | No heat-related restrictions. Normal schedule. |
| 1 |
Low (Yellow) |
80.0°F – 85.0°F | Increase hydration reminders. Encourage use of shade during outdoor time. Reduce prolonged sun exposure when feasible. |
| 2 | Moderate (Orange) | 85.0°F – 88.0°F | Modify outdoor activities (shortened duration, added shade breaks). Increase access to water (no restriction). Limit time outdoors during the warmest part of the day. Monitor classrooms without air conditioning. |
| 3 | High (Red) | 88.0°F – 90.0°F | Cancel outdoor activities during peak heat hours (10 AM–5 PM) and move into cooled spaces. |
| 4 | Very High (Magenta) | Above 90.0°F | Cancel all outdoor activities. |
Please note that CIF has separate heat-related guidelines for secondary students participating in athletics. High school athletic directors will communicate directly with families if any adjustments to CIF practices or games are necessary.
SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
If you see something, say something - Don't spread it- report it!
This is the best deterrent to potentially harmful situations. We want everyone on our campus, including parents, guardians and guests to be empowered to report any unusual or suspicious activity to a site administrator, employee or police.
