Bike & E-Bike Safety



Newport-Mesa Unified School District has created Board Policy (BP) 5142.04 - Bicycles and E-Bikes to enhance student safety and provide clear guidance for students who choose to self-commute to and from school. This policy is effective starting in the 2026-27 school year.

Elementary & Middle/Intermediate Students (TK-8th Grade)
- Students in elementary and middle/intermediate schools are strictly prohibited from possessing or operating E-bikes, E-motos, and other devices, as listed in the definitions of BP 5142.04, on school property, including the periphery of campus, at all times.
- Students are encouraged to ride bicycles and are required to wear a helmet and participate in a bike safety training, along with other requirements outlined in BP 5142.04.
High School Students (9th-12th Grade)
- Students in grades 9-12 may possess an E-bike on campus.
- E-motos and other devices, as listed in the definitions of BP 5142.04, are strictly prohibited on any district property.
Students are required to participate in an E-bike/bicycle safety training program, along with other requirements outlined in BP 5142.04.
