The California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) recognized Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) with five communications awards for excellence in engaging and informing the community through strategic public relations campaigns, social media, and storytelling.

“Effective communication is essential to a strong school district, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts to keep families, staff, and the community informed and engaged. These awards reflect our commitment to storytelling and fostering connections with our school community,” said Superintendent Dr. Wesley Smith.

The list below showcases the award-winning communications honored in the 2025 CalSPRA Excellence in Communication Awards Program, recognizing efforts from the 2023-24 school year.

Award of Excellence, Comprehensive Program or Campaign: FAFSA Marketing Campaign 

When the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form was overhauled, it caused delays. Our district swiftly responded to support students and families through a comprehensive outreach campaign—including news articles, videos, FAQs, fliers, and social media engagement. We helped clarify the process, rebuild trust, and boost FAFSA completion rates. This recognition reflects our commitment to ensuring students have the resources they need for their future. 

Award of Excellence, Tactics: Social Media: School Board Recognition Month

Serving on a school board is a significant responsibility that requires dedication to students, schools, and the community. To highlight the role of NMUSD’s Board of Education trustees and their contributions, the district created a series of social media posts featuring their work in our schools along with a few personal fun facts. This award recognizes our goal of strengthening the connection between board members and the community they serve.

Award of Excellence, Tactics: Excellence in Writing: Students Navigate the World in Annual Geography Bee at Lincoln Elementary

The spirit of curiosity, learning, and community comes to life in the annual Geography Bee, as highlighted in this feature. By showcasing students' enthusiasm for study sessions, teamwork, and friendly competition, this story illustrates how the Geography Bee nurtures a global perspective and enhances students’ educational journeys. This award honors the impact of storytelling in celebrating meaningful learning experiences, reinforcing that education extends beyond textbooks to ignite exploration, foster critical thinking, and shape well-rounded, informed individuals.

Award of Excellence, Tactics: Excellence in Writing: Mobile Maintenance Crew Spruces Up Learning Environments, One School at a Time

This story highlighted the innovative approach taken by the district’s Maintenance and Operations Department to enhance campus facility needs with efficiency and personalized care. By rotating through the district’s 33 schools, the Mobile Maintenance Crew revitalized facilities while fostering stronger connections with staff and students. This award underscores the importance of showcasing the meaningful work done by staff to create safe, well-maintained learning environments that support student success and school pride.

Award of Merit, Tactics: Excellence in Writing: Back Bay Intramural Sports Encourages Teamwork, Promotes Positive School Environment

This feature about Back Bay High School’s intramural sports program showcased how the initiative fosters community, pride, and teamwork among students and staff. The importance of this program lies in its ability to enrich positive school culture through sports. Alongside initiatives such as the community garden and Spyder Lab, Back Bay is creating meaningful collaborations and opportunities for students. This award shows the impact of spotlighting unique programs to positively affect the whole child, a priority of the NMUSD Board of Education. 

CalSPRA is a nationally recognized statewide organization, with more than 850 members representing school districts and county offices of all sizes. Its annual conference and awards program provides professional development and networking opportunities while recognizing and supporting excellence in education-based public relations.
