Sam Solhpour, an eighth-grader at Corona del Mar Middle/High School, was recognized with several awards at the 70th annual Orange County Science and Engineering Fair last month at Chapman University.
Thanks to his hard work, he was selected to participate in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, sponsored by the Society for Science. He was also nominated to participate in the California Science and Engineering Fair later this month.
In addition to his first-place award in the Math and Software category in the Junior Division (grades 6-8), Sam received the following Special Awards in the Junior Division:
- Naval Science Award from the Office of Naval Research
- Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
"Sam’s achievements are a testament to his passion for using science and technology to solve real-world problems. His success also reflects the strong foundation and support he’s received from our school and teachers like Laura Keane, Eddy Reyes, and Aubrey Benjoya. We are immensely proud of him and look forward to his future accomplishments," said Principal Dr. Jake Haley.
Titled “Forecasting Renewable Energy Production Based on Historical Weather Data in California: Predictive Analysis Using Regression Modeling,” Sam’s project uses complex AI modeling and advanced mathematical equations. He developed predictive models for renewable energy production—focusing on solar and wind energy—using historical weather data and regression analysis.
Improving the accuracy of renewable energy forecasts helps curtail unnecessary electricity generation and significantly lowers reliance on fossil fuels. His project would save 10,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy per day, or 15 percent of daily energy produced in California, by utilizing accurate forecasts.
More than 800 students across Orange County submitted projects rooted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Winners received a medal, certificate, and various monetary rewards.
Sam's achievements highlight both his inherent talent and the critical role that schools play in inspiring young innovators. By providing exceptional learning opportunities, resources, and encouragement, Newport-Mesa Unified School District prepares students to thrive and shape a brighter future.
