Mesa students cheering on fellow student

At Costa Mesa Middle/High School, clubs and programs aren't just activities—they're the heart of the positive campus culture. From robotics to dance, these extracurriculars unite students in shared passions, breaking down barriers and fostering belonging. They teach empathy, teamwork, and leadership, preparing students for success beyond graduation. In these clubs, students find more than just connections to their hobbies, they build a community that shapes them and what they stand for.

Where Everybody Belongs (WEB)

A program on the combined middle and high school campus, Where Everybody Belongs (WEB), launched this school year. WEB is a student mentorship program where incoming seventh-graders are welcomed into the middle school by a ninth-grade student mentor who helps them navigate the campus and shares their experiences.

Teachers at the campus recommend ninth-grade students to serve as peer mentors. “We are looking for a cross-section of students who represent our entire Mesa Nation — not only ASB leaders but also students representative of our diverse student body,” said Middle School Activities Director Evonne Marvin.

Before being paired with incoming middle-schoolers, mentors are trained in leadership skills, including how to model integrity and engage respectfully, as well as five important concepts: attendance, grades, behavior, test scores, and school culture. The WEB leaders support their seventh-grade buddies as they achieve academic and social success, encouraging the growth of a positive school culture. The goal is for the bond to continue as the middle schoolers advance to the high school level alongside their mentors.

In addition to WEB, several other clubs on the Costa Mesa campus make students feel welcomed and supported through peer connections.

Kindness Club

Members of the Kindness Club at CMHS at Spring Showcase

Created last year, the Kindness Club welcomes all students. Students work to create a safe and caring campus by spreading random acts of kindness. Every other Friday, the group recognizes someone at the school for their efforts to be positive and promote goodwill by giving them a small gift and a shoutout. During Let’s Be Kind Day, a movement started by a former student, members of the Kindness Club do various school events to spread kindness such as Kindness Gram booths in which positive notes and candy are delivered to friends for free.

Persons of Color Student Union

The Persons of Color Student Union provides students with opportunities to increase their awareness, engagement, and connection to students across all cultures. By discussing their experiences as people who represent, embrace, and live within multiple cultural dynamics, they cultivate a sense of belonging and acknowledgment within their campus community.

Skate Club

The Skate Club promotes positivity through outreach efforts into the skateboarding and rollerskating community. The group of skateboard enthusiasts welcomes anyone with an interest in practicing their skills or learning a new activity. Every other week, club members venture to a nearby skate park for fun and community-building. They also host fundraisers to buy helmets, boards, and other gear to donate to the skate community to keep them safe.

Among the other clubs on campus are those aimed at building bonds through shared interests such as the Chess Club, Film Club, Garden Club, Handball Club, K-Pop Dance Club, STEM Club, and Surf Club. Still others are aimed at students with a philanthropic mindset, including the Key Club, Red Cross Club, and Eco Wild.

With these and many other clubs and events on campus, students from all walks of life are building connections and other important life skills that contribute to their personal and academic success. Studies have shown that when students feel motivated, supported, and respected, they are more likely to be engaged in learning and have a greater sense of belonging.
