Newport-Mesa Unified School District continually seeks to update and modernize school facilities by creating beautiful and purposeful learning spaces for students. Below are some projects currently under construction, slated for construction, or in the planning process. 

Facility & Maintenance Master Plan

Planning continues on the development of a district-wide facilities and maintenance master plan. The plan will outline strategies, priorities, and guidelines for the district's facilities and maintenance department to provide physical infrastructure that supports the educational mission and goals of our schools. It will establish a long-term vision for the district's facilities, taking into account factors such as enrollment projections and program needs to anticipate and address future facility demands in a comprehensive and thoughtful manner. 

Facilities staff conducted walkthroughs of district schools and property in collaboration with school principals to document school facility needs. Needs assessments will continue throughout summer, with public meetings anticipated in fall 2023 to gather public input.

Current Construction Projects:

Estancia High School

• Estancia Baseball and Softball Scoreboards

This project replaces existing baseball and softball scoreboards with new ones to give each field a refreshed and modernized look for the next sports season.

Estimated Completion: Summer 2023

• Estancia High School Theater

Preliminary construction activities have begun on the two-story, approximately 350-seat theater. The project includes a black box theater, lobby, box office, front-of-house support services, dressing rooms, scene shop, and costume and prop storage, as well as improvements to the exterior landscaping to provide a space for students to engage in the arts and express their creativity.

Upcoming Construction Projects:

Ensign Intermediate School

• Ensign Student Gathering Area

Construction is anticipated to start in summer 2023 on an outdoor student gathering area that includes landscaping surrounded by brick and concrete seating walls in the center of campus. This will provide students a space to gather for lunch, nutrition breaks or socializing.

Estimated Completion: Winter 2023/2024

Newport Coast Elementary

• Newport Coast Field Access
   

 

This project includes shade structures, seating, stairs and ramp to access the top-level field. Construction is anticipated to start in summer 2023.

Projects in the Planning Phase:

• Elementary School Multipurpose Room Upgrades
  This project includes an upgrade of the audio-visual equipment in elementary school multipurpose rooms. Facilities staff is currently working with schools to determine each of their needs to establish equipment specifications, budget estimates, and project schedules.

• Costa Mesa High School Bleacher Expansion
  The current Mustangs Field includes seating for approximately 1,000 spectators. This project includes expansion of seating capacity to accommodate a total of 2,000 spectators. The project also includes a new team room, restrooms, various site improvements, and relocation of the visitor light stanchions.

• Estancia Football Weight Room
  This project includes the relocation of the football team room and outdoor weight area to better accommodate the needs of the school. This project is in the early planning phase with schematic design underway.

• Estancia Student Gathering Courtyard
   

  
  When the new pool was constructed, the location of the previous pool was filled with concrete, but the space has been underutilized. This project is in the design phase and will convert the space to a student gathering area with shade structures, greenery, and seating. 

• Harper Assessment Center Site Improvements
  This project includes expansion of the existing parking lot with new parking stalls and alterations for an accessible pedestrian path from parking lot to administration building. A construction start date for this project has not yet been determined.

• Newport Harbor Aquatics 
  This project includes a remodel of the aquatics complex, including installation of shade structures, replacement of bleachers, addition of sports lighting and relocation of the scoreboard. Additional project features include pool replaster and deck repairs, remodel of locker rooms, restrooms, showers and remodeled coaches’ offices. The project is currently in the design phase. 
  
  District staff is working with school administration and the City of Newport Beach to relocate aquatic activities during construction, as the pool will not be available during construction. A construction start date for this project has not been determined. All efforts will be made to minimize pool closure time and lessen the impact on the school and community aquatics programs.

• Newport Harbor Culinary  
  This project is in the early planning stages and includes modernization of the culinary program kitchen. Schematic designs and cost estimates are currently underway.
