What began as a fifth-grade science project has grown into a groundbreaking technology now shaping wildfire response across California. Ryan Honary, a senior at Newport Harbor High School, was recently named one of Homeland Security Today’s “Top 50 Trailblazers in Homeland Security” — the youngest individual ever to receive this recognition.
“Ryan’s accomplishments show the extraordinary potential of our students when they are encouraged to explore their passions and apply what they learn. From the classroom to national recognition, his journey reflects the power of education to spark innovation and impact. We are honored to celebrate Ryan and the example he sets for his peers,” said Newport Harbor High School Principal Dr. Sean Boulton.
Ryan is the creator of SensoRy AI, a low-cost, solar-powered, wireless sensor network that uses artificial intelligence, rotating infrared cameras, and environmental monitoring to detect flickering embers before they spread into dangerous wildfires. The system, inspired by the devastating 2018 Camp Fire, has since moved far beyond the classroom. In 2025, the Orange County Fire Authority launched a live trial of SensoRy AI across Irvine’s wildland-urban interface, demonstrating its real-world promise to safeguard communities.
Beyond his groundbreaking technology, Ryan is also the founder of the Climate Solutions Society, a nonprofit organization empowering young people worldwide to develop tech-based solutions to environmental challenges. In its first year, the Society expanded to six chapters across high schools and has plans for global growth.
Ryan’s leadership and vision have earned him international recognition as a Youth Delegate at the United Nations Summit for the Future and, most recently, selection to the Homeland Security Trailblazers list. He will be honored at the official reception in Washington, D.C., on September 30, 2025, followed by a private tour of the U.S. Capitol.
Ryan hopes to use this recognition not only to advance SensoRy AI, but also to inspire his peers across Newport-Mesa Unified School District. “I want other students to know that they don’t have to wait until they’re older to make an impact,” he shared. “If you have an idea that can help others — start now.”
As Ryan looks toward college and future global collaborations, he remains deeply grateful for the encouragement he’s received from the Newport Harbor and Newport-Mesa community. His journey stands as a powerful reminder of the impact young people can have when innovation, education, and determination come together.
