Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is collaborating with the Orange County Department of Education to provide the Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program to students and community members.
Part of this program is an intervention plan for students, a required element of the district’s anti-tobacco policy. With parent consent, students who have used tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, or vape materials may participate in an educational program, YVAPE. Students may also meet with school counseling staff to discuss ways to help them make healthier decisions related to tobacco/nicotine and to quit use completely. The school has additional education and cessation resources available.
The following resources through the Orange County Health Care Agency are also available to help students quit tobacco:
-
Information on tobacco cessation and education services through the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP).
-
“What you need to know about tobacco to talk to your teens” from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
-
Materials on the dangers of e-cigs and vapes developed by the Orange County Department of Education in partnership with the Orange County Health Care Agency and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department with funding from the California Department of Education Tobacco-Use Prevention Education Program.
The district is committed to the health and wellness of its students and appreciates the partnership it has with families in supporting healthy choices now and for the future.
