The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education is currently seeking applications for appointment to the Personnel Commission. The term of office will be December 1, 2025, through December 1, 2028.

The Personnel Commission is a public body responsible for the administration of a Merit System, which oversees the selection, retention, and promotion of Classified (non-teaching) employees in the public school system. It is composed of three (3) members from the local community appointed for three-year terms, with the term of one member expiring each year.  

Each Personnel Commissioner receives the sum of $25 for each meeting attended in any one month, plus medical benefits. Personnel Commission meetings are on the third Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the District Office.

To qualify as a Personnel Commissioner, you must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be a registered voter and resident within the Newport-Mesa Unified School District boundaries;
  • Be a known adherent to the principles of the Merit System and support the concept of employment, continuance in employment, in-service promotional opportunities, and other related matters on the basis of merit and fitness;
  • Not be a member of the governing board of any school district or county board of education;
  • Not be an employee of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District;
  • Be able to attend monthly Personnel Commission meetings at the Newport-Mesa Unified School District office at 4:00 p.m.
